Title: Books!
Post by: Alon on February 12, 2008, 08:50:07 AM
Do you read them?  What kind?  Any favorite authors?

Since last summer, I've gotten into reading mystery novels.  I can't say that I have a favorite author, but I've read quite a few by Sujata Massey and S.J. Rozan.

I read quite a lot over the summer when the weather was warm and I could read outside.  I haven't been reading as much now that it's colder.

I rarely read books per se. I read aviation and meteoroligical journals, sports magazines and children's books.

Ok, I know WHY you read children's books, but it still made me laugh when I saw that.   ;D}

Novels are fiction based on real life.

I guess that would be an interesting read. I bet the novel depicts a clash of social values between the East and the West.

"Read more" is always on my list of New Year's resolutions but it's always one that gets broken. lol I have been reading a lot lately (inspired by one of the smartest people I know) and just finished "The Bone Garden" by Tess Gerritsen.  Gripping and endlessly fascinating, a page turner as my mentor puts it.   and "Suite Francaise" by Irene Nemirovsky, a blend of fiction and fact of the German invasion of France.  I am currently reading "Remains Silent" a novel by Dr. Michael Baden and Linda Kenney.  Very interesting reading though I have to look up a lot of scientific terms.  Where are the nurses when you need them?  :D

Short stories: Jeffrey Archer, Frederick Forsthe, Roald Dahl (in reverse order) and, with rare exceptions, the novels of each.

Novels: Ken Follett, Alistair McLean (although predominately action-based, the language most similar to my own and surprisingly the most unexpectedly touching love stories amidst war), James Clavell, AGATHA CHRISTIE (particularly Hercule Poirot, particularly those with Captain Hastings, preferably those written in Hastings's first person perspective), and without a shadow a of a doubt, Ed McBain - the precinct novels (I believe 87 of them) are unbelievable.

If you are not stupid, you will trust me and do it.

May 1695. During a horse race at Edo Castle the chief of the shogun’s intelligence service, Ejima Senzaemon, drops dead as his horse gallops across the finish line—the fourth in a recent series of sudden deaths of high-ranking officials. Sano Ichiro is ordered to investigate, despite his recent promotion to chamberlain and his new duties as the shogun’s second-in-command.

Life with Picasso by Francois Gilot

At 21, Gilot met 62-year-old Picasso. For nearly a decade, she shared her life with this complex artist, giving birth to two of his children. In her recollections, she describes the exuberant, if exhausting, world they knew together.

An excerpt:

"But there are some things you can't spare other people," he said. "It may cost a terrible price to act in this way but there are moments in life we don't have a choice.".... I asked him how he arrived at that rationalization...."Theoretically one might say one hasn't the right to reach out for a share of happiness, however minute it might be, which rests on someone else's misfortune, but the question can't be resolved on that theoretical basis. We are always in the midst of a mixture of good and evil, right and wrong, and the elements of any situation are always hopelessly tangled. ..."

I told him I had often thought he was the devil and now I knew it.

-Francois Gilot

A book review (from somewhere)

Reading "Life with Picasso" is really reading about any relationship with a psychopath. Except this psychopath was hailed as a child prodigy and celebrated during his lifetime as an artist of which there was no superior. Francoise's story might as well be a case study one would read in a psychiatry journal. Picasso is a textbook example of a psychopath.

A seemingly brilliant psychopath though I learned in Huffington's book he was barely literate and never learned to spell. He was good at imitation, mirroring and obfuscation. Basically he was a con man like those guys with the pea under the cup. Picasso kept everything moving so quickly and prodigiously the public and sycophants thought he was a leader, a trailblazer and some even thought a Messiah. Dora Maar- a mistress of Picasso's- was rumored to have said: "After God, Only Picasso."Maar had converted to Roman Catholicism due to a vision. The vision relayed in Gilot's book scared Picasso so, he had her institutionalized. Picasso stated Dora prophesied his damnation. Despite accusing her of being insane, a common condition victims of narcissists are branded with, he obviously feared her revelation. Diagnosing her insane allowed him to continue unabated in his debauchery and cruelty.

Carry on he did, with numerous women. Gilot documents with austerity Picasso's dalliances; she sensed immediately that her survival in a relationship with Picasso would be by accepting whatever he gave and expecting no more. A sentiment that is commonly felt by those in abusive relationships, the union was inherently one of master and sycophant. Though Gilot mostly likely did not end up dead by a self-inflicted, unlike one wife, one mistress and one grandson, wound because she was underneath her naivety and youth, self-possessed. Picasso never had her entirely, even when she acquiesced and had a child at his seeming command, she did so because she wanted to and had another not because Picasso said it would ground her, read: tether her to him forever, but because she herself did not like being an only child. Gilot loved Picasso and learned much from him, but I would suspect now it was an education no one needs.

Reading this books having read others on Picasso, I am convinced his art was a snub at the divine. And act of an inmate who smears his %$&# on the wall, even though he has to live in the cell with the smell and the excrement. Picasso was capable of bridging art, of being the conduit that was lost, of being what the Greeks had, a canon; Picasso understood art, dissected it on his canvas, tore human frames apart but created nothing. His art was a refusal to submit, productions of a wannabe god. Reading Gilot, Huffington., Olivier, Mailer I became enchanted with Picasso's theories and thoughts, I longed to know him. Longed until I snapped out-of-it a bit shocked a long-dead narcissist could draw me in still, and realized he was full of %$&# and most of his works just the acts of an inmate.

Read the quote above, it's so alluring especially if you read it in context, in full. Picasso's circular logic twirls like an Escher print and charms like a promise of health, wealthy, beauty and love if..
If you: cheat, lie, steal, fornicate, imbibe... A priori to happiness is sacrifice so he anchors himself in truth, but sacrifices what is not ours to give, someone else. We cannot find happiness on the backs of others, yet his quote above, said to convince Gilot to live with him unmarried at the age of 20 in 1940s, claims all happiness necessarily causes others to suffer. Christ died for us. We didn't die for Him. Makes one wonder who Picasso's master was?

This book is an excellent autobiography well worth reading if you want to know more about Picasso and/or Gilot. And it also serves as a case study of an infamous psychopath.

So I finished my book on the Japanese lost decade.  It's amazing how the U.S. pretty much did the exact same thing that Japan did in the 1980's leading up to their bubble.  The book was written in 2001 and predicted the same problem in the U.S. which of course did happen starting in 2007.

I guess no one in the U.S. read the book.   :}*

I have little faith in all the so-called experts who are now trying to "fix" things.  Seems they are just repeating the mistakes Japan made in the 1990's.  Here comes several years of a lousy economy yay!    :sweating:

Alon, you are halfway there. Now just figure... for every dollar lost, someone is making a dollar. You know the US is gunna lose money, so get in with those that are going to gain those dollars. See waht I am saying? Every cloud not only has a silver lining, it has golden horns and hoofs to boot

Sure, things like oil and other commodities will retain global value when the U.S. dollar falls off the cliff, so putting money in those types of things are a good hedge.  Of course when you're lazy like me you can't be arsed to go to all that trouble.

I'm currently reading a book called Generations, by William Strauss Neil Howe

It's probably of interest only to Americans, but it's a very interesting study.  The authors (they're historians and demographers) point out that the U.S. has gone through 80 year cycles during its history, with four distinct phases within each.  The four phases repeat themselves in order, then the 80-year cycle begins again.

For example, go back 80 years before WWII and you get the U.S. Civil War.  Back 80 more and you are in the U.S. Revolution.  Another 80 lands on the French and Indian Wars.

Likewise, today's U.S. Baby Boomers have characteristics and act like generations born in 1860, 1780 and 1690 (all have a sense of righteousness and entitlement).  The book's message is that history does indeed repeat itself and each generation type has it's own unique, but repeating traits (1 of 4 types).

If they are correct in their observations, we are due for a crisis period like the Revolution, Civil War, and WWII around the year 2020.

Start stockpiling provisions now...  :D

For a magnificent story and astounding love story.... Wilbur Smith's "Eagle in the Sky"

It is not Mills and Boon type romance where romance is the aim of the game, nor is it commercially set to fit a genre. But it is an outstanding read that, manages amongst other things to be the greatest love story I have read.

Eagle in the Sky

Posted by Graham on Wednesday, February 14, 2007
Author:
Wilbur Smith

Publisher:
Pan MacMillan

Blurb:
A brilliant young jet pilot and an Israeli girl find the strength of their love pitted against the horror of modern warfare in this haunting story of passion and anguish set in the strife-torn Middle East.

Gray Says: My first exposure to Wilbur Smith is an utterly engrossing one as this is an epic love story that just about throws every emotion and passion imaginable into a storyline which is never less than riveting. Written during the turbulent early ‘70s, Smith gives us a glimpse of the violent world of the Middle East and the hostilities between Syria and Israel. With bloody terrorist accidents around every corner, this is not a story that shies from conflict and it feels real because of this.

Smith’s young lovers are given plenty of characterisation as the story progresses and the author isn’t afraid to make his lead, David Morgan, totally unlikable as the story begins. Vain, narcissistic and forever searching for something meaningful in life, David Morgan undergoes a sweeping transformation, physically, emotionally and mentally, and seeing what happens to his character is a major draw. As his love interest, Debra Mordecai is never less than lovely, and her humility and warmth act as a relief from the painful emotions that take place elsewhere.

This certainly isn’t an easy story to read and much of the narrative borders on horror, with disturbing incidents taking place with some regularity. Some scenes, like the fire, I found extremely difficult to read as things get pretty gruesome. When David Morgan mentions early on that he thinks maimed people are “obscene”, you know he’s going to be in for a tough ride and Smith always chooses to focus on the harsh realities of existence as the tale unfolds.

The narrative can be roughly divided into three segments. The first third introduces the characters and their Israeli-set romance before tragedy befalls them; this is perhaps the ‘wordiest’ part of the book but persevere as things improve. The second part sees Smith relocating his characters to Africa, where he feels more at home and where the living landscape is a supporting character in itself. Here the book contains some action staples, including an evil villain and a victimised heroine, as well as an extremely unpleasant baboon. The final third of the book is by far the best, beginning with a major plot twist that ups the tension and suspense unbearably, keeping you guessing until the very last page.

Smith’s unconventional romance story goes into some very dark places indeed but it remains completely engrossing precisely because of that. Running the gamut of emotions and educating the reader about world politics, society and foreign locations along the way, this is a ruthlessly efficient novel that still seems fresh and engaging to this day. This book is a real masterpiece which helped to change some of my opinions about the world.

Currently I am reading 'Billy' by Pamela Stephenson.

A very good book, one of the best I have read for quite a while.

The inside story of the one of the most successful British stand-up comedians, as told by the person best qualified to reveal all about the man behind the comic, his wife - Pamela Stephenson.

Whatever your opinion of Billy Connolly, his life has been an epic tale of controversy and hilarity, tragedy and comedy. From working-class roots in Glasgow he has made his way to the top and now enjoys huge worldwide acclaim and dream lifestyle.

From welding to folk singing to comedy to writing to acting, Billy has proved beyond doubt his versatility and sheer determination. And if anyone knows that better than him, it's his wife, Pamela, who gives us an insider's view of this hugely talented musician, singer, TV presenter, comedian and actor.

With stories of the highs and the lows, the good times and the bad, Pamela takes us behind the scenes of Billy's films, TV shows and sell-out tours to give us something of the real Billy Connolly.

I read him before he became popular.

There are a few tele-movies of the novels starring Kenneth Branagh. It's high quality, intelligent TV, and that combined with the fact that there are no special effects means that you have no chance of seeing it in America, but if you can import some DVDs I assure you that you Alon should enjoy.

This is the true story of a top-flight criminal lawyer who was convicted of cocaine trafficking and sentenced to maximum security, and the monsters he came across in maximum-security. Real-life stories such as this are far, far beyond the comprehension of the majority of people brought up on American rubbish as to what the "real world" is really like. For those interested in litery excellence, read the classics and a very select cache of modern authors (Heller, Clavell, McLean, Dahl and Ludlum.) For fair dinkum shocking reality, read Aussie true-crime books. Anything else is like knitting without wool (and in the case of Americans, needles as well.)

Quote
His birth was marked by wonder and tragedy.

He sees beauty and terror beyond our deepest dreams.

His story will change the way you see the world.

On the heels of his #1 bestseller False Memory, Dean Koontz brings together his most compelling themes and an unforgettable cast of characters to create what is perhaps the most thrilling and emotionally powerful work of his critically acclaimed career.

Bartholomew Lampion is born on a day of tragedy and terror that will mark his family forever. All agree that his unusual eyes are the most beautiful they have ever seen. On this same day, a thousand miles away, a ruthless man learns that he has a mortal enemy named Bartholomew. He embarks on a relentless search to find this enemy, a search that will consume his life. And a girl is born from a brutal rape, her destiny mysteriously linked to Barty and the man who stalks him.

At the age of three, Barty Lampion is blinded when surgeons remove his eyes to save him from a fast-spreading cancer. As he copes with his blindness and proves to be a prodigy, his mother counsels him that all things happen for a reason and that every person’s life has an effect on every other person’s, in often unknowable ways.

At thirteen, Bartholomew regains his sight. How he regains it, why he regains it, and what happens as his amazing life unfolds and entwines with others results in a breathtaking journey of courage, heart-stopping suspense, and high adventure.

Right now, I'm reading more of the Kurt Wallender series by Henning Mankell

After this, there aren't any more in the Wallender series that are available on my Kindle.  I'm not sure why that is actually.  It seems to me that an author shouldn't really care if their book is sold in paper form or electronically, yet some authors aren't available at all for e-readers.

I assume it's all about money somehow...  :}*

Hi RWC!  Nice to see you back! :)

I haven't read any of Koonz's books.   I take it he's into parallel universes and other weird stuff, eh?

Yeah his works are more into horror fiction [also sci-fi and suspense].

Take a look at one of his works:

Quote
#1 New York Times bestselling author Dean Koontz brings his fertile imagination and unparalleled storytelling abilities to one of the most timeless—and terrifying—creations in all of fiction: the legend of Frankenstein. In Lost Souls, Koontz puts a singular twist on this classic tale of ambition and science gone wrong, and forges a new legend uniquely suited to our times—a story of revenge, redemption, and the razor thin line that separates humanity from inhumanity as we consider a new invitation to apocalypse.

The work of creation has begun again. Only now things will be different. Victor Leben, once Frankenstein, has not only seen the future—he’s ready to populate it. Using stem-cells, “organic” silicon circuitry, and nanotechnology, he will engender a race of superhumans—the perfect melding of flesh and machine. With a powerful, enigmatic backer eager to see his dream come to fruition and a secret location where the enemies of progress can’t find him, Victor is certain that this time nothing and no one can stop him.

It is up to five people to prove him wrong. In their hands rests nothing less than the survival of humanity itself.

They are drawn together in different ways, by omens sinister and wondrous, to the same shattering conclusion: Two years after they saw him die, the man they knew as Victor Helios lives on. Detectives Carson O’Connor and Michael Maddison; Victor’s engineered wife, Erika 5, and her companion Jocko; and the original Victor’s first creation, the tormented Deucalion, have all arrived at a small Montana town where their old alliance will be renewed—and tested—by forces from within and without, and where the dangers they face will eclipse any they have yet encountered. Yet in the midst of their peril, love will blossom, and joy, and they will discover sources of strength and perseverance they could not have imagined.

They will need all these resources, and more. For a monumental battle is about to commence that will require all their ingenuity and courage, as it defines what we are to be . . . and if we are to be at all.

It was actually recommended by one of my co-admin/s from other forum site [unfortunately that site had been closed just recently] and i'm looking forward to get some copies of his books as I find too not only his books but he as an author himself an interesting one to know. For now, I'm still on the process of finishing Dan Brown's Digital Fortress [im now in chapter 23 where Susan sat alone in the plush waiting for someone, lol] and John Gray's Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus [currently struggling in chapter 4 where I am figuring out what sort of title it has "How to Motivate the Opposite Sex", LOL]

I finally finished the Sherlock Holmes book, and moved on to

It's about a detective on the subcontinent.  The plot wasn't overly complicated, but I liked it.

RWC,

I finally found the first book in the Koontz Frankenstein series

Apparently, Frankenstein grew tired of Europe and now resides in New Orleans.   :D

The book was pretty good! So now, I'll have to get the second one.

I bought the second in the series yesterday and got started on

The Frankenstein in this series walks around New Orleans, so I don't think he looks like:

Then again, maybe he does.

It's New Orleans, after all...   :}*

The second book was ok, but not as good as the first.  Now I'm on the third (out of four)

Ok, I've finished all four (of the "trilogy"   LOL! ) with

Actually, the trilogy was the first three books, and now the author's on a second trilogy with a new set of monsters.

The next in the series won't be out until next year, so I went back to England for:

Kersey, I watched one of the Kurt Wallander programs you mentioned earlier.  Different from the book, but not too bad.

Yah. Kenneth B is excellent.

The greatest of the British telemovies is "Inspector Morse" with the late John Thaw. Around 26 movie-length shows were made, inspiring "A Touch of Frost", "Midsomer Murders" etc.

Incredibly good acting, a "hero" that is nothing like Americans have ever seen, great classical music scores... "whodonits" that you can wach time and again.

Here's my share.....

I loved the first couple of Koontz books I read. The first was where people reverted to their primal forms, and the second was in a carnivale where demons take on human form.

After those, Koontz was working off a standard text where he merely inserted names and places like data entry amongst standard text. You see, his publishers got to him and it's just been nonsense ever since. Everything is the same. Every 90 pages is a sex scene where "bodies meld as one, waves crash silently upon the sand, to be washed away and replaced by a greater wave..." blah blah blah.

(Actually, my example is better than anything written by Koontz)

I was able to buy

For $.99, so I figured I'd splurge for it.

I guess since Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's been dead for like a hundred years, he's not too hard up for the money.   LOL!

I recommend that you do not read cover-to-cover. Just one story at a time, then read something else, then back again.

Sir A C Doyle was a great, great writer. Not just his Sherlock Holmes works. Everything he wrote was absolutely wonderful.

That's good advice KERSEY, but it's too late.  I finished the Sherlock Holmes works a few months ago.  Looking back, I think I would have enjoyed it more by alternating between Holmes and other books.  I'm doing that now with the Laurie King follow-on works and it's a better read.

Since it only cost USD $.95, I decided to read

It's written by Adam Smith, an 18th century Scottsman who is considered the first modern economist.

This one is going to take awhile to get through.  Not only is it about 600 pages long, it's written in 18th century English.   :sweating:

That's Scotsman, and the grapple with a foreign language (English) should help to focus your concentration.

Combine it with "The Art of War" and philosophically you can take over the world.

What about Machiavelli?  I would think he's also a must read for anyone taking over the world.

Of course, if you're from outer space then you could probably simply use a laser ray that comes out of your head, and skip the reading all together.   ROFL!:

A co-worker of mine, who comes from quite a posh family, related to me his thoughts upon reading the "Art of War" as a 12 year-old:

"Keep your friends close, but your friends closer" really influenced him in Dodgeball, and "Softly, softly, catchee monkey" helped him enormously when playing "Bash the Primate"

Well, the formguides are good when related to modern circumstances. Those like my colleague as a 12-year-old and Brianne ought be aware however that the book should be studied in context, and not taken literally.

Hopefully this will prevent Brianne encircling Angie with a bunch of Samurai warriors (heavily moustachioed in the finest Chink style) whilst Angle screeches "I like Bing Lee" and commits hari-kari whilst Dougie the Pizza Boy delivers a Kamahl-styled Rogan Josh with tea and Ceylonicide

One thing that's sort of frusting with Amazon/Kindle is that they don't release a whole series at the same time.  There are several books in this series, but only half of them are on Kindle, and they aren't in order.  It's happened with several other series that I've read.  I don't get it.  Why not just release the whole series at the same time?

Have you read, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"?  I saw the Swedish version movie and I thought it was great!

Fifty Shades of Grey looks to be some sort of erotica genre.   :really scared:  I looked at a couple of the reviews on Amazon, and it seems like a lot of people hate it.

Even though I like mystery/thrillers more than reading about other people having sex over and over (apparently  ) I might give the book a try.  I'll go look and see what some of the positive reviews have to say first.

I did read the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy and it was great.   I also saw the movies and thought they did a really good job.  :)

This series is like a follow-on to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's, Sherlock Holmes.  While the original Holmes stories took place in the 19th century, King moves Holmes into the 20th.  The original Holmes is a different style.  It's much more about clues and who-done-it, while King is more novelesque.  Anyway I've found her books to be pretty good.

Yep he sure was cop-oriented before he wrote the books, coz he was a cop.

Incredible the diference between real-life cops and movie cops in America. The real-life cops are overweight and under-intelligent.

In Australia, the real-ife and movie cops are identical. All hard bastards and totally villainous. One of our most feared stand-over men gave an impromptu speech at a highly decorated retiring cop's farewell dinner. His words:"To the best crook I've ever known."

Good on you. Those Hollywood books are one storyline (fictious) story at its core, based around a multitude thread of tales he learnt from many various cops.

His best books are "The New Centurions" and "The Blue Knight", the former tracing the lives of 4 rookie cops from training to... their various ends, and the latter the last days of a 30-year veteran.

He also wrote some true-crime books, made into movies, notably The Onipn Field (James Woods and Ted Danson) and my all-time favourite, a mini-series "Echoes in the Darkness." Very highly recommended.

I. J. Parker has a new book out that isn't part of her regular series.  Since it was free on Amazon, I decided to try it.  Not bad, but not as good as her other books.

The only good female writer of this century and the last was Agatha Christie. Women are masters of fiction, but none of it is in the slightest bit entertaining.

Well, ok, it's about an Ex-pat and a bar girl, but still, there really aren't any Filipino mystery novels out there wtf?

I suppose there are, but they're probably written in Tagalog.   :goofy:

Not really.

I guess it's because I'm not one to hero worship atheletes or events.

I like to ride my bike a lot and so I really like watching the Tour.  If I had known back then that Lance was cheating, I wouldn't have bothered to watch, and now that it's out, I won't bother watching him again.  I will keep watch the Tour de France though.

To me, they were just bike races, and now they're over.  I don't know.  It's all just something in the past.

Thanks Kangaroo, I did some quick browsing on the site and saw some authors I recognized.  I'll have to dig in some more because there are some hard to find authors there.

Over the weekend I read:

This was the fourth in his series, and the last, I guess.  At about the mid point of the book, the main character was killed off, and his partner took over narrating the rest of the story.  I don't recall ever seeing that before.  It's too bad really, I liked this series.  I guess either he got tired of writing, didn't make enough money, or ran out of ideas or something.

Then I moved on to:

I think Cotterill is an Aussie, but he lives in Thailand.  He's got a great sense of humor for a mystery writer.

Now, I'm reading SJ Rozan's:

She's also has a good sense of humor.

I read a lot over the long weekend.  First, I finished up Furutani's Samurai Mystery series:

I like this series.  Too bad it was limited to three.

So then it was back to Sweden.

Then on to the second in the series:

(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51KhOVRibVL._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA278_PIkin4,BottomRight,-70,22_AA300_SH20_OU01_.jpg)

Apparently, a third book was written (there's a sneak peek after the second) but it doesn't look like it got published.  Too bad as it was pretty well written.

Now I'm reading:

The author cleverly uses the original Conan Doyle work to "authenticate" the stories he writes, which are in the same vein as the original, but with a Japanese setting.  So far, it's good!
Title: Re: Books!

One of my favorite authors, Colin Cotterill, an Aussie:

This series takes place in Laos in the 70's.  While that doesn't seem like the best setting for a mystery series, the author's sense of humor is always a fun read.
Title: Re: Books!

For usd$0.99, I took a shot and bought

(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51icJDblZdL._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA278_PIkin4,BottomRight,-58,22_AA300_SH20_OU01_.jpg)

Now I understand why the price was only 99 cents.
Actually, it was alright for the price, but I don't think I'll be following this series.

So, I went to the latest from Timothy Hallinan, who is really good:

Here's the first book of a new series for me.

It's a New York cop type of mystery.  So far, it's not bad, but it's not going to be a favorite.

I think I figured out why I like international mysteries better than U.S. ones. It seems like the books that are set in the U.S. all read like what you see in movies and TV, so there's a sameness to them in my view.  The international mysteries are different so I find them to be more interesting.

It seems like Amazon has been adding more and more older books to its ebook selection, and many of them are cheap, like $.99 cheap.

While older novels can sometimes be obvious (like when a character uses their carphone  ), I can get past it if the story is good.

My latest read is a $.99 special written in 1995.  There were over 200 reader reviews and the first few I looked at were good, so I thought I'd give it a go.

Seems to me that you view books and movies over and above their intrinsic entertainment value to be works of art.

It has been said by many esteemed gentlemen that films are the greatest form of art of the 20th century.

I recommend to you, if I am right, "The Story of Film." Unwatchable and certainly incomprehensible to most, but for those of the ilk I suspect you to be, riveting. An 8 CD set is available on Amazon. It includes worldwide studies of influential movies including Indian, Iranian, Hong Kong, Chinese, German, and the odd American movie-makers.

PS Spielberg and Lucas are included...

Thanks for the recommendation mate.  Sounds like something I would like.

I think most people in the U.S. don't go beyond the typical blockbuster U.S. movies and novels, but I do, mainly for something new and different.

I'm now reading the next book in the Inspector Chen series:

Only a few of the books I've read I haven't liked much.  The Patricia Cornwell book was one of them.  It seemed totally disjointed and the ending was like, "huh?"

I don't plan on reading anything more from her anytime soon.

It's a historical novel set in 19th century Korea.  So far, I like it.  The author does a good job developing the main characters.  And the price was right.  $.99  :D

This is the first book I've read by this author.   :}*

Good call! This author is a complete dyke, and thinly disguises her main character as the typical man-hating one. The main character, "Scpaetta" from memory, is supposedly a normal woman, but this merely serves the author's aganda is portraying men in a terrible light (both overtly as villains and opaquely as flawed specimens in supposedly "good" characters)

In reality, her writing is predicatbale and formulaic, the stories repetitive, the male characters ridiculously detesatable on many levels, and she is a chardonnay-swilling, male-detesting lemon-sucking lesso. A pox on her! Or more agonising (for both the giver and receiver) - a cox on her!

This book read very quickly and it seemed like it was too short.  Maybe the plot wasn't developed enough.  A very unusual and abrupt ending.  Overall, it was an ok book, but not on my recommend list.

On to Japan

And presently in Nepal

All were good, but none of them are part of a series.  I've read several of Murakami's novels which were really good.  This one was just ok.  There didn't seem to be much to the story.  Maybe that was the point of "Colorless." :D

This is also the second in the series, although this one has over 20 books!  The first one was pretty good so I'll keep going.

Amazon is bringing out books that were originally published years ago.  I'm reading

Amazon says it was published in 2012, but it's pretty obvious that this book was written sometime in the 1980's.  It's not a bad novel, but it's dated.

I picked this up at the airport.  First time for this author.  It's pretty good, but the plot isn't very realistic.
